How to join SCOAP3
More than 3,000 libraries in 43 countries participate to SCOAP3. They make it possible for 7,000 articles to be published Open Access every year. Your library can join and make Open Access sustainable. It is cost neutral.
How does it work?
SCOAP3 replaces journals subscriptions paid by libraries with a new model to make articles Open Access. Since 2014, participating publishers Elsevier, SpringerNature and the Institute of Physics Publishing have reduced subscription costs to all customers. From 2018, the American Physical Society (APS) will also participate in SCOAP3 resulting in respective reductions in subscription fees.
SCOAP3 partner libraries redirect these savings into a common pool, which is then used to make articles Open Access. Funding agencies in research-intensive countries, and CERN, also fund the initiative.
APS joins SCOAP3 in 2018
From 2018, the American Physical Society (APS) will also participates in SCOAP3 with the high-energy physics content of three of their journals. As a consequence, the APS will reduce the subscription fees for all its customers.
Libraries already participating in SCOAP3 receive 2018 renewal invoices which will automatically show a SCOAP3 reduction. For APS operational reasons, invoices for libraries not yet participating in SCOAP3 are based on the list price of the journal or package. APS will then issue a credit for the amount of SCOAP3 reduction.
What next, how to contribute?
In most cases, participating universities individually contribute an amount commensurate with their reductions on subscription costs.
